Grant Enables New Hope Ministries to Serve Those in Need

New Hope Ministries can continue food pantry services thanks to a $30,000 grant to cover a walk-in cooler/freezer. New Hope is a Christian social service agency that shows the love and hope by serving their neighbors in times of need and supporting their efforts towards stability. They provide a variety of assistance and services in the Dillsburg, Dover, Hanover, Mechanicsburg, and West Shore areas of Pennsylvania. With the assistance of York County CDBG Funding, New Hope has expanded its vision for their Dillsburg Outreach Center from a small row house, to full service walk-in Center with classrooms, food pantry, job junction, and warehouse storage to serve as a HUB for food deliveries. Dillsburg will be the logistical HUB for New Oxford, Dover and Hanover which are fixed sites, as well as additional mobile pantry sites.

Appropriate temperature control makes a huge difference in what types of food, and the quality of the food you can distribute at a food pantry. In this area alone, thousands of pounds of fresh fruit, for example, go to waste because of lack of proper cooling. In addition, the combined freezer offers options for teaching food preservation techniques; including “putting up food for the winter”. Frozen food is available inexpensively at the Central PA Food Bank, including whole prepared meals, but you must have a freezer to receive it. The flexibility and wide range of food donation and purchase options that adequate cooler/freezer space opens are tremendous on the secondary market. A commercial cooler/freezer puts the food pantry on a whole different level than working out of multiple, inefficient residential coolers.

New Hope will purchase a walk-in Cooler/Freezer with similar specifications to the one they have a proposal from REMCO, Inc. for listed at $59,550. It has 4′ walls for insulation. That includes the units, installation, and the compressors. They would like to find a used one as they have done in the past, preferably with a warranty and/or sales contract.
